Director's Statement
The society is advancing, but in certain level, the changes brought by the advancement also cause confusion and imbalance to our values, and such imbalance might creates unimaginable power and turn against the society.
The story circles around a "stone". Every character is constantly changing. Some people dedicate their life chasing the precious while it is already next to them; some people work hard just to earn a decent living, while accidentally receive the best thing in the world. Isn't it a strange world? If I were a scholar, I would say, "I haven't seen anything as weird as this for over 20 years!" But I wasn't a scholar, I was just a storyteller. What I want to tell is a story that happens in an ordinary city, in this ever-changing era. Indeed, the story happens in China.
A friend of mine once asked me what morality is for a Chinese man. I answered, "Hard work, honesty, hospitality, bravery …" My friend laughed at me and said the only morality left in Chinese man is good in singing and dancing. It's true, the story I want to have has numerous character singing and dancing on a city-sized stage. They sing and dance around a "stone", and things start to get crazy and danger.
I see Crazy Stone as a comedy, a black humor, a story that makes many laughs. It's not based on true story, but who can guarantee it's not?
